For most teens taking the SAT in 2027, PrepScholar is the best online prep course: $397 for a year of adaptive self-paced prep, a 5-day free trial, and a 160-point guarantee at any starting score below 1370. On a tight budget, Achievable’s $99 course is the best value, and its money-back promise has no study-time requirements. Before you buy anything, have your teen take a free official practice test in the College Board’s Bluebook app.
We haven’t put a student through any of these courses. This guide is based on each provider’s pricing, course and terms pages and on the College Board’s test-date page, all read on 2026-10-14 and linked in the sources. We compared price, format (self-paced vs. live), the actual rules behind each score guarantee, and how each course fits the 2026–27 test calendar. We also ranked the free official tools, because for some teens they’re enough.
The College Board offers free full-length digital practice tests in Bluebook, and free Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy builds a personal study plan with lessons and quizzes. If your teen is self-motivated and only needs a modest bump, this may be all they need. A Bluebook score is also the baseline you’ll want before choosing a paid course, since every guarantee below depends on where your teen starts.

Why it’s the top pick: PrepScholar has the best mix of price, flexibility and a usable guarantee. The $397 plan covers 12 months of adaptive lessons and 8 official College Board SATs, and the 5-day trial leaves the charge pending, so you can cancel at no cost. If your teen needs a teacher, the $895 plan adds up to 36 hours of live classes with no more than 9 students. The $995 plan adds 1:1 tutoring. Freshmen and sophomores can get two years for $577.
Not for: teens who won’t finish assigned work. The guarantee only pays if every assigned lesson and practice test is done.

Why it’s here: At $99 one-time with a full year of access, Achievable is the cheapest real course here. It’s an online textbook with 190+ chapter quizzes, 6+ practice exams, an AI tutor, an adaptive study planner, and unlimited generated math practice. It works on the web or a phone. Its “improve your score, or your money back” promise lists targets of +120 (starting below 1000), +90 (1000–1200) and +60 (1200–1400), and says no study time or progress thresholds are needed to qualify.
Not for: teens who need a human teacher, or who already score above 1400. The page lists no target for that range.

Pricing: 6-Week Flagship live SAT course $1,196 (or 4 × $299) on its current schedule pages; other course prices shown per schedule

Watch out for
Why it’s here: Prep Expert is the most structured option: 12 live 3-hour classes over 6 weeks (the Flagship course, $1,196 or 4 × $299 on its current schedule pages), recordings of any missed class, and free weekly office hours. It has the biggest headline guarantee: +200 points.
Not for: teens starting above 1250 (the Terms of Service cap the full 200-point guarantee at that starting score), or teens who’ll miss classes. The guarantee needs 80% attendance, 90% of homework on time and every practice test. Full refunds are only available within 14 days of purchase.
Every guarantee is tied to your teen’s starting score, and a course that fits one teen can be a poor bet for another. Here’s what each one promises at each starting score, based on the providers’ own pages:
| Starting SAT | PrepScholar | Achievable | Prep Expert |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1000 | +160 | +120 | +200 |
| 1000–1200 | +160 | +90 | +200 |
| 1200–1250 | +160 | +60 | +200 |
| 1250–1370 | +160 | +60 | Smaller target (see Terms) |
| 1370–1400 | Reach 1530 | +60 | Smaller target (see Terms) |
| Over 1400 | Reach 1530 | Not listed | Smaller target (see Terms) |
| Effort required | All assigned lessons and practice tests | None stated | 80% attendance, 90% of homework, all practice tests |
Price per guaranteed point, at the cheapest plan that carries each guarantee:
A guarantee is a refund, not a result, but this shows how much each provider is betting on its course and what you’re paying for structure.
The College Board’s 2026–27 weekend SAT dates still to come are Nov. 7 and Dec. 5, 2026, and March 6, May 1 and June 5, 2027. Registration closes about two weeks before each one (for example, Feb. 19 for March 6). The anticipated 2027–28 dates start Aug. 28, 2027.
Both PrepScholar’s and Prep Expert’s guarantees require an official SAT soon after the course ends (within 60 days, or the next available date). So:
Work back from the test date. A live 6-week course plus the 60-day retake window used by most guarantees is a good guide: start roughly two to three months before the test you’re aiming for.
For some teens, yes. Bluebook has free full-length official tests, and Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy is free. Paid courses add structure, adaptive planning, and a refund if scores don’t rise.
On paper, Prep Expert’s +200, but only from a starting score at or below 1250, and only with strict attendance and homework. Achievable’s is smaller but says there are no study requirements. PrepScholar’s +160 is in the middle and covers higher starting scores.
March 6, May 1 and June 5, 2027 (registration deadlines Feb. 19, Apr. 16 and May 21), plus anticipated fall 2027 dates of Aug. 28, Sept. 18, Oct. 9, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4. Check the College Board’s page before registering, since the fall dates aren’t final.
